Ship
A ship is symbolic of the church of Jesus Christ. The cross on the sail makes clear that this is Christ's
ship; that Christ is its captain and its pilot. This naval symbolism persists - the main portion of the church
building is called the nave. The sailing ship was an important means of transportation in the ancient
world. Paul's many missionary journeys are associated with sailing ships. Luke's graphic description of a
storm at sea (Acts, Chapters 27 and 28) comes out of one of Paul's journeys.
