Nails and Crown of Thorns
This vivid combination of nails and thorns is reminiscent of the trial and crucifix; on of Jesus. The
persecution and humiliation of Jesus by the Roman soldiers, including the crowning with thorns, is
recorded in Matthew 27:28-29; Mark 15:17-18 and John 19:1-3. Although nails are not explicitly
mentioned in the crucifixion story, doubting Thomas' assertion in John 20:25 makes clear the cruel
suffering inflicted through crucifixion. "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my
finger in the mark of the nails I will not believe. "
