Stained Glass Windows in the Sanctuary of
First Baptist Church of Royal Oak
Lamp
The lamp has had a varied symbolic relationship to religious faith. In the Old Testament, a familiar
reference is in Psalm 119, an acrostic psalm of 176 verses praising the law of God. The 105th verse reads,
"Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. " It is included here in recognition of the work of
our Sunday school and religious education department in training our children and young people.
In the New Testament, the most famous passage mentioning lamps is probably the parable of the ten
virgins and their lamps, (Matthew 25: 1-13). A lamp as an instrument bringing light is symbolic of the
Bible which presents Jesus, the Light of the World.
