Bread and Wheat Sheaves
This combination is interesting and unusual, yet Biblical and Christian. The symbolism has several
meanings: (1) Jesus is the bread of life. "Jesus said unto them, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to me
shall not hunger'. " (John 6:35). (2) The loaf of bread symbolizes the church as the body of Christ. Paul
writes, "The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one
loaf, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the same loaf." (I Corinthians 10:16-17). (3)
The wheat growing out of the loaf symbolizes Christians as growing citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven,
deriving their life from the body of Christ for which the loaf stands. Matthew 13:24-30, the parable of
wheat and weeds, stresses this meaning. (4) A fourth meaning might be related to the Lord's Prayer,
where "our daily bread" symbolizes all that sustains life from day to day. (Luke 11:2-4).
